Professor @ University of Castilla-La Mancha

Carlos Romero-Nieto earned his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Castilla-La Mancha (Spain). During his PhD, he joined Prof. Thomas Baumgartner’s group at the University of Calgary (Canada) to work on phosphorus heterocycles. In 2010, he moved to Germany for a postdoc in Prof. Dirk Guldi’s group at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. In 2013, he received the Liebig Fellowship to start his independent career at the University of Heidelberg, where he later obtained his habilitation in Organic Chemistry (2019).
Now a professor at the University of Castilla-La Mancha, he leads a research group focused on developing molecular systems based on six-membered phosphorus heterocycles for materials science and biomedical applications, including brain cancer and flavivirus research.
His work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Hengstberger Award (2016), the RSEQ National Award for Young Researchers (2018), the RSEQ of Castilla-La Mancha Award for Young Researchers (2020) and the ERC Consolidator Grant (2023). He also received the IAAM Scientist Medal (2024) and was named Knight of the Order of Santiago for his scientific achievements. In 2025, he founded TreatBrain Therapeutics S.L., a spin-off company dedicated to developing drugs against brain cancer.
